TAE (The Animation Evolution) is a journey through history to explore the early days of animation up to the present day. The ancestors of cartoons, from whose foundations and intuitions we started to then arrive at the 3D computer graphics of today’s images and animations.
TAE (The Animation Evolution) è una gita nella storia per esplorare quelli che sono gli albori dell’animazione fino ai gironi nostri. Gli antenati dei cartoni animati, dalle cui basi e intuizioni siamo partiti per poi arrivare alla computer grafica in 3D delle siete e delle animazioni odierne.
The magic lantern is a tool for projecting painted images (usually on glass) onto a wall (or a specially prepared screen) in a dark room, using a closed box containing a candle, whose light is filtered through a hole on which a lens is attached. The procedure is essentially similar to that of a modern slide projector.
La lanterna magica è uno strumento di proiezione di immagini dipinte (di solito su vetro) su una parete (o uno schermo appositamente predisposto) in una stanza buia, tramite una scatola chiusa contenente una candela, la cui luce è filtrata da un foro sul quale è applicata una lente. Il procedimento è del tutto analogo nella sostanza a quello di un moderno proiettore di diapositive.
It is the device of the pre-cinema closest to the real cinematographic show.
Si tratta del dispositivo del precinema più vicino allo spettacolo cinematografico vero e proprio.
Invented in the 17th century by the Dutch astronomer and mathematician Christiaan Huygens, the magic lantern immediately became the protagonist of a new form of entertainment, consisting of the projection of luminous images. In fact, the magic lantern quickly spread throughout Europe as an instrument for popular and street performances.
Inventata nel XVII secolo dall’astronomo e matematico olandese Christiaan Huygens, da subito la lanterna magica divenne protagonista di una nuova forma di spettacolo, costituita dalla proiezione di immagini luminose. Infatti, la lanterna magica si diffuse rapidamente in tutta Europa come strumento per spettacoli popolari e da strada.

Over time, continuous technical improvements were introduced, both in terms of lighting (from the candle to increasingly efficient lamps), and in terms of the quality of the optical system. During the 19th century, the magic lantern was no longer used only in public shows, but instead enters many private homes becoming a source of family shows for the enjoyment of young and old. In fact, especially from the last quarter of the 19th century, the magic lantern becomes a very popular toy. Toy magic lanterns were produced in thousands of specimens and in the most varied forms. The producers were mostly French and German.

Nel tempo furono introdotti continui miglioramenti tecnici, sia per ciò che riguarda l’illuminazione (dalla candela a lampade via via piò efficienti), sia per ciò che riguarda la qualità del sistema ottico. Nel corso del XIX secolo la lanterna magica non è più utilizzata solo negli spettacoli pubblici, ma entra invece in molte case private diventando fonte di spettacoli familiari per il divertimento di grandi e piccini. Infatti, soprattutto a partire dall’ultimo quarto del XIX secolo la lanterna magica diventa un giocattolo molto popolare. Le lanterne magiche giocattolo erano prodotte in migliaia di esemplari e nelle forme più svariate. I produttori erano soprattutto francesi e tedeschi.
Animated plates
They are plates for magic lanterns where a glass with a fixed image is superimposed on a second glass which, with a rotating movement, animates the image on the screen.
Lastre animate
Sono lastre per lanterna magica dove a un vetro con un’immagine fissa viene sovrapposto un secondo vetro che, con un movimento rotatorio, anima l’immagine sullo schermo.
The chromatotrope
An interesting variant of this type of projection plate is represented by the chromatrope. In this case we have two overlapping glasses that both rotate, but in a concentric and opposite direction to each other. Using two glasses with the same geometric design, an effect similar to that of a kaleidoscope is recreated on the screen.
Il cromatropio
Una variante interessante di questo tipo di lastre da proiezione è rappresentata dal cromatropio. In questo caso abbiamo due vetri sovrapposti che ruotano entrambi, ma in senso concentrico ed opposto l’uno all’altro. Utilizzando due vetri che riportino lo stesso disegno geometrico, si ricrea sullo schermo un effetto simile a quello del caleidoscopio.
Animated slide plates
It is a very simple type of image animation that lends itself to an infinite number of variations. They are projection plates with two glasses, one fixed and the other mobile. The jewel glass is moved laterally by means of a puller. The moving glass depicts the image to be animated (for example, two moving eyes), or one or more black masks are painted which hide or reveal a part of the subject reproduced on the fixed glass.
Lastre animate a tiretto
E’ un tipo di animazione dell’immagine molto semplice e che si presta a un’infinità di varianti. Sono lastre da proiezione con due vetri, uno fisso e la’ltro mobile. Il vetro monile è mosso lateralmente tramite un tiretto. Sul vetro mobile è raffigurata l’immagine da animare (ad es., due occhi che si muovono), oppure sono dipinti uno o più mascherini neri che nascondono o rivelano una parte del soggetto riprodotto sul vetro fisso.
